There is a war on women being waged in Oklahoma. If you look at the statistics measuring women’s health in the state and then consider the anti-woman laws being passed by our male-dominated legislature, the facts are clear. We can no longer sit on our hands and hope that more sympathetic minds prevail. If we truly want Oklahoma to be a safe place for our daughters to call home, it is time to take action.

Sally's List was founded in response to two alarming trends. First, at 12.8%, Oklahoma ranks 49th nationally in female representation at the state legislative level. Second, Oklahoma ranks as one of the unhealthiest states in the country for women’s health. This is hardly a coincidence. Studies show that female state legislators consistently create and pass legislation that improves the lives of women. Our woefully outnumbered female legislators are fighting a losing battle when it comes to addressing women’s issues from a woman’s point of view.

At Sally’s List, our mission is crystal clear; recruit and train progressive women to run for the Oklahoma state legislature. Women do not instinctively feel qualified to seek elected office and it is not a decision they necessarily come to on their own. However, when actively recruited and educated in the campaign process, they become enthusiastic and disciplined candidates. Studies show that when women run for office, they win in equal numbers to men. It’s not that Oklahomans don’t want to vote for women. There just aren’t enough female candidates for whom to vote.
